What I’ve Learned In My 30 Years Working For A Family Office
By Michael T. Oliveri
When you are part of a successful family, the intricate details of wealth and lifestyle management can be overwhelming. Thankfully, there are people dedicated to helping families build and preserve their wealth while managing the complex challenges that come with it. My long career has been focused on doing just that.
Career Overview
I graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. After beginning my career as a tax consultant at Deloitte, I soon joined William E. Simon & Sons, a private equity firm and family office founded by William E. Simon, an American businessman and the 63rd United States Secretary of the Treasury and his sons, William E. Simon Jr. and J. Peter Simon. Rising to the role of Chief Financial Officer in my almost 30 years with the firm, I have served in many roles, including Tax Accountant for the family office, Controller and Vice President of various distressed debt and private equity funds, and a member of the investment committee for the Simon family.
When William E. Simon & Sons combined with Simon Quick in 2017, I was part of the transition team and now I am the Chief Financial Officer of Simon Quick Advisors.
What I Do Today
Our team provides a wide variety of services to clients, including lifestyle management, income tax planning and preparation, accounting, estate tax planning, and multi-family real estate management. I manage the daily operations of the office and oversee the accounting, investment, financial planning, treasury, and tax functions. I also personally manage and integrate all aspects of business and personal financial management, including cash flow and philanthropy.
There are plenty of challenges in overseeing the many services we offer our clients while maintaining the close relationships with them and understanding their needs. My 30 years working with three generations of the Simon family has stretched me professionally more than I could ever have imagined, and has enabled me to develop the expertise necessary to handle the many day-to-day issues that come with overseeing the interests of a high net worth family. Most of all, it has been hugely satisfying to know that I have been an integral part of the family’s continued success.
At Simon Quick, I am privileged to assist our clients in achieving their financial goals and focusing on what matters most to them. Every day I strive to identify better ways to deliver the broad array of services necessary to make the largest difference in the lives of our clients.
