Peter Simon: Why I Love Investment Management
By J. Peter Simon
At a young age, I saw just how true the phrase “do what you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” is. My father was a successful Wall Street leader, and I saw how much he loved his job. He provided a strong and positive impression of the financial services industry, and I was inspired to do the same: pursue a career that allowed me to help others and feel satisfied in what I was doing.
Starting My Career
After graduating college with a degree in psychology, I started my career at Kidder, Peabody & Co. Twelve and a half years later I was a Managing Director in the Convertible Securities Department at Kidder Peabody. While I enjoyed what I was doing, I wanted to play a more active role working with my family, managing the capital earned by my dad.
In 1988, I made the switch and co-founded William E. Simon & Sons, LLC along with my late father, former Treasury Secretary William E. Simon, and my brother, William E. Simon, Jr. In 2017, we combined with the firm to form Simon Quick Advisors, where I now serve as a Managing Partner.
Working in My Community
Today, I feel fortunate enough to work in a family office setting, both working at Simon Quick Advisors and serving as Co-Chairman of The William E. Simon Foundation.
I love that I have the opportunity to give back to my community in so many ways. Philanthropy is one of my greatest passions, and I am proud to have been involved in so many incredible organizations. Currently, I serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Richard Nixon Foundation and the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. I am also a member of the New Vernon Cemetery Association Board of Trustees and a provisional member of the Charles Hayden Foundation. In all of my board roles, I have served the Investment Committee, offering financial and investment guidance, often becoming the chair.
My Inspiration
Just as my father loved his career, I love mine. There are plenty of challenges that come with this career, including personal issues that require judgment and occasionally very difficult choices. Managing a firm while balancing my other responsibilities can also be challenging, but I can’t imagine having any other career.
I enjoy investing and the markets, and I have been an enthusiastic and lifelong student for 43 years. Every day, I’m driven by my ability to take care of people within a subject about which I am knowledgeable and passionate. This job can be difficult at times, because as an advisor I have to deal with situations that are often out of my control, but knowing that I am truly helping someone makes this a rewarding career.
