Like many others, I found my way into my career through the example of someone close to me. In my case, it was my father’s interest in the financial world that sparked my passion and eventually led me to pursue investing as a career. As a kid, I would watch my dad study the markets, read his Value Line subscription, and watch CNBC for financial news. He was such a successful student of the markets that his Smith Barney stockbroker would often pitch my dad’s ideas to his other clients. Having this example in my formative years, I couldn’t help but become interested in the markets and investing myself. This interest has led me down the path to a fulfilling career.
With my passion and goals in hand, I started equipping myself with the tools I’d need to be successful in the industry. I earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the College of the Holy Cross, an MBA from Columbia Business School, and eventually obtained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) designation.
When I started working in the industry, it was in the field of property and casualty insurance at Aon Risk Services. I joined Simon Quick Advisors a few weeks after the firm’s inception because I was drawn to both the entrepreneurial spirit of the firm and the independent client-centric approach to wealth management that was being delivered to our client base. I was eventually placed on the management committee and made partner in 2013. I have now spent almost 15 years with Simon Quick Advisors and have found my experience to be incredibly rewarding.
My Role Today
Today, I am a Managing Partner and the Chief Investment Officer at Simon Quick Advisors, responsible for day to day management of the firm and for overseeing the firm's asset allocation and portfolio construction. I work closely with the client advisors to structure client portfolios specific to each client’s goals and objectives.
I primarily work with high-net-worth individuals, families, endowments and foundations. My clients are unique in that they all have different needs, goals, objectives, and priorities. As the partner on their account, I help to ensure that the appropriate financial planning and investment solutions are implemented with the clients' best interests in mind.
Challenges And Victories
While I love my job, there are challenges that go along with it. Due to the busy and full lives of my clients, financial decisions aren't always their first priority. Careers, family, and friends can take precedence, and it can be hard to get clients to focus on their financial affairs. While their intentions are good, they don't have the bandwidth to make it a priority. This is where I can step in and help. Oftentimes, my happiest clients are those who delegate the investment selection process to myself and the client advisory team because it frees up time for them to pursue their other interests. In these instances I can act as a guide for the client and take some of the financial burdens off their mind. It’s so fulfilling when a client puts their trust in me and relies on me to give them thoughtful advice.
I truly enjoy what I do. I love problem-solving and embrace the challenge of identifying planning and investment strategies specific to each client’s unique situation. I work hard to develop and grow long-term relationships with my clients and colleagues.
